Part of your vehicle registration may be federally tax deductible, but there are a few rules you should keep in mind:

  • You cannot deduct the whole cost of your vehicle registration, only the part of the fee calculated from what your vehicle is worth (value based). This excludes all flat fees, weight-based charges, title fees, processing fees, and plate fees.
  • Not every state charges a value-based registration fee. If you live in a state that does not, you can’t claim this deduction. Check your registration bill for a breakdown.
  • You must itemize to deduct your vehicle registration. You can’t take this deduction if you choose to take the standard deduction.
  • You can deduct your vehicle registration as part of the state and local tax (SALT) deduction, which is subject to a federal cap.
