Your tax rate (the percentage of taxable income you pay) depends on your filing status and your taxable income. For 2026, the federal income tax rates are 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%, and each filing status (single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, etc.) has its own income thresholds, called brackets, for each rate.

In general, the more taxable income you have, the higher your top tax rate. However, you have to pay that rate on only the portion of your taxable income that falls in that bracket. For example, if you’re a single taxpayer and your taxable income is $70,000, your rate is 10% on the first $12,400, 12% on $12,401 to $50,400, and 22% on the remaining $7,200.

Tax rates and brackets can be more confusing than they seem at first glance. Luckily, your local Jackson Hewitt Tax Pro is here all year and ready to help. Find tax services near you, then walk in or book now.
