The IRS-approved standard mileage rate for 2025 is 70 cents per mile for business and self-employed workers. It’s 14 cents per mile for charitable purposes, and 21 cents per mile for medical transportation or military moving.

Keep in mind that if you own the vehicle, you can only claim the standard mileage rate if you do so the first year the vehicle was used for business purposes. You can then choose the actual expense method in future year if you elect. If you lease the vehicle and choose the standard mileage method, you’ll have to keep doing so throughout the life of the lease.

The standard mileage rate can make calculating mileage deductions easier, but it’s not the right method for every situation. Get the answers you need and plan out your taxes with the pros. Book your appointment today.
