File previous years’ tax returns the same way you would a current tax return:

  1. Gather your tax documents: You’ll need any W-2s, 1099s, and/or any documents needed to claim credits or deductions. If you cannot find or do not have this information, you can request a transcript of previous tax information from the IRS, even if you did not file a return.
  2. Complete your tax return: Using your tax documents from the appropriate year, complete the tax return for the year you missed. Make sure to use the tax return form for the appropriate year. Work with a Tax Pro to ensure your return is completed correctly.
  3. File your tax return: You can file a previous year’s tax return with the IRS any time. Some recent years can even be filed electronically with a Tax Pro.

If you owe back taxes or have overdue tax returns from previous years, don’t tax alone. Your local Jackson Hewitt Tax Pros are here all year and ready to help. Book your appointment today.
