You cannot deduct tuition costs from your taxable income in 2025. However, you may qualify for the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) or the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC). These are tax credits that could help cover the costs of tuition and other education expenses.

The AOTC is worth up to $2,500 per student, and up to 40% is refundable. That means you could see some leftover credit back as a refund. The LLC is worth up to $2,000 per tax return and is nonrefundable, which means you won’t get any remaining credit back as a refund.

Both the AOTC and LLC can help cover tuition, as well as mandatory school fees, textbooks, as well as other supplies and materials necessary for the course. The modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) limit for both credits is $90,000 for single filers and $180,000 for joint filers.
