Jackson Hewitt® Reminds Taxpayers to File by April 15, Despite Recent Government Shutdown

JERSEY CITY, NJ, March 11, 2019

A recent Jackson Hewitt Tax Service® survey, conducted by Research Now, shows that the government shutdown might have had a larger impact on tax filing behavior than expected. The survey found that taxpayers are expecting delayed refunds and more time to file past April 15, Tax Day, due to the recent shutdown. Jackson Hewitt® reminds taxpayers that taxes are still due on April 15, and refunds are still expected to arrive on time.

Key findings:

  • 40% of respondents think they will be given more time, past April 15, to file their taxes since the government was shut down.

  • 73% of millennials believe their tax refund will be delayed due to the government shutdown.

  • 74% of Gen Z, the youngest taxpaying generation, reported that they ask questions before filing their taxes: 32% talk to a Tax Pro, 28% ask a friend or relative, and 14% contact the IRS.

  • 63.8% of millennials feel capable of filing taxes themselves this year given the recent tax law changes, which is slightly more than any other generation reported.

  • 45% of respondents think their refund will be the same this year, despite tax reform.

  • 20% of millennials have postponed filing their taxes since the government was shut down.

“Not only are we experiencing the largest change to tax law in over 30 years this filing season, but the government shutdown appears to have added to the confusion,” said Shara Abrams, Senior VP of Operations at Jackson Hewitt. “Our recent survey found that the government shutdown may have led to some common misconceptions, with some groups postponing getting their taxes done, including 40% of people thinking they will have more time to file past April 15.”
