JERSEY CITY, N.J., April 2, 2019

Despite the fast approaching tax filing deadline of April 15, 2019, millions of Americans who had filed by this time last year still haven’t filed their 2018 tax return. According to the most recent IRS filing report comparing this year against last, as of March 15, the IRS has received nearly 2 million fewer tax returns than the same time last year.

“This drastic change from just last year could be because of tax reform,” said Shara Abrams, Senior VP of Operations at Jackson Hewitt. “We’ve heard from many people who said they are afraid they will owe, so they are procrastinating filing their taxes. And according to a Jackson Hewitt survey, conducted by Research Now earlier this year, 13% of respondents said they think they will owe taxes and 21% said they think their refund will be less.”

Additionally, the average tax refund is down $3 as of March 15, 2019 from the same time last year, according to the same IRS report.

“It’s good to know what your tax outlook is, sooner rather than later. If you owe, you still have a short window to prepare, and remember that payment isn’t due until April 15,” added Abrams. “Jackson Hewitt offices across the country are open late and on weekends, with no appointment necessary. Our Tax Pros do the work, so you don’t have to worry.”
