Get to Know Our Tax Pros10.10.13
We asked some of our Tax Pros from all across the country the same set of questions to get to know them better. Here’s what Bruce MacKinnon of Sparks, Nevada, had to say.
Q: What do you love about Jackson Hewitt? How long have you worked here? Why do you stay?
A: I really enjoy working at Jackson Hewitt. It's a very friendly company and people are very willing to help each other. I've been here five years. I stay because I enjoy helping people with their taxes, enjoy the people I work with and because there are no limits as to the challenges faced. Always learning something!
Q: What do you when you're not preparing taxes?
A: When not preparing taxes, my wife and I enjoy traveling, the outdoors and family. I am also a history buff and avid reader.
Q: Why did you first start preparing taxes? How did you get into the business?
A: My wife worked one season preparing taxes. She enjoyed the work, though not the company she worked for. I decided to look for a better mix and came upon a Jackson Hewitt ad on the Internet— 20 minutes later I was scheduled for class.
Q: What's your best/favorite customer story?
A: I had a young man in tears sit down at my desk. Started his return and found he was recently widowed and left with two small children. He shared that his father-in-law had been diagnosed with cancer, needed a sophisticated test and the hospital would not perform the procedure without prepayment. He had no idea of the credits he qualified for. He got a refund of over $7,000 and was able to pay for his father-in-law's test. He dropped by at season's end; procedure performed, cancer in remission, happy ending.
Q: If you could tell taxpayers one thing what would it be?
A: Come to a tax professional. I've had too many "do-it-yourselfers" make mistakes and miss deductions or credits; the supposed savings are often a mirage. We'll maximize your refund (or minimize your balance due) and you’ll know it's done correctly. We're worth every penny.
