People join the military for all sorts of reasons – to travel to new parts of the world, get help paying for a college education, develop new skills or build character. But many who join the ranks don’t think about what they’ll do when their military service ends. With the highly transferable skills they learn in the military – leadership, communication, technical competence and attention to detail – the possibilities are endless. Even so, many have a hard time finding their next career.
Jackson Hewitt is a strong supporter of our nation’s military, and has a history of having veterans on our team. Two of these veterans – Ronald Lafond and Donald Parmenter – are two shining examples of the Jackson Hewitt tax preparer community
A Lt. Col. and member of the Air Force for more than 23 years. He says that working as a Jackson Hewitt tax preparer appealed to him because of his interest in the complexity of the tax code. Ron’s leadership skills and his in-depth experience completing personal tax returns and complicated business-related tax forms for his wife’s apparel businesses gave him the perfect foundation for a post-military career in tax preparation. Ron manages a Jackson Hewitt storefront location in Wilmington, N.C. and credits his success as a tax preparer to his military training in problem solving and working with others. Ron also says that being a tax preparer keeps him connected to his community. Beyond his relationships with Jackson Hewitt customers, he plays third base in a neighborhood softball league, serves as an election judge and is the president of his local residence’s Homeowners Association.
Also based in Wilmington, N.C., Donald Parmenter grew up in a military family. His father had a long career in the Army and Don spent his youth traveling around the world. He attended Yale University on an ROTC scholarship. After graduation, he was commissioned as an officer on a minesweeper in Charleston, S.C., and also served in Guantanamo Bay, Puerto Rico, Spain, France, and other locations throughout the Mediterranean and Caribbean. First drawn to a career in tax preparation by a storefront sign promoting Jackson Hewitt’s professional Tax School curriculum, Don attributes his success to his attention to detail, passion for learning and strong ability to communicate – all skills he learned in the Navy. As a tax preparer, Don helps military families prepare their taxes and says he appreciates the opportunity to share stories and connect with them. He highly recommends Jackson Hewitt to other military veterans considering their next career move.
This year, Jackson Hewitt has committed to hiring 1,000 veterans and their spouses this tax season across their network of 6,800 nationwide locations. Veterans and members of the military represent a highly skilled group of workers for employers today. Jackson Hewitt remains committed to helping veterans find the right path for their post-military careers.
